Trail Tales: Hidden Lake Trail – Lake Carlos State Park
Lake Carlos State Park has a quiet, timeless feel, the kind of place that seems to slow the world down a notch. Established in 1937, the park is one of Minnesota’s early state parks, designed to showcase the rolling hills, oak forests, and glacial lakes that define west-central Minnesota. On a mid-October morning, that landscape felt especially calm. The air was cool, the sky a dull gray, and the trail was empty except for the soft rustle of leaves underfoot.
The Hidden Lake Trail loops through a mix of hardwoods, maples, oaks, and basswoods, its path winding between clusters of trees and open glades. Fallen leaves covered much of the trail, making each step soft and muffled, while occasional roots and small rises kept you mindful of your footing. Along the route, brief openings reveal views across Lake Carlos, its surface calm and reflective, framed by the muted autumn colors. The trail moves in gentle curves, with occasional low areas where the forest floor dips slightly, creating subtle changes in perspective as you walk.

The forest is quiet but alive: the calls of distant birds echo through the trees, and squirrels scurry through the leaves. About 500 yards from the end of the loop, a steady rain began, coating the path and foliage, adding a soft rhythm to each step and transforming the colors of the forest into deeper, richer tones.

Completing the loop, I returned to the trailhead with the steady rain falling around me, feeling the calm of the woods and the lake linger. The trail itself, its twists, curves, and quiet openings, made the experience feel intimate and personal, a simple escape into Minnesota’s autumn.
Let’s keep rambling.
